Clinique
Clinique is an offshoot of the Estee Lauder Company and premiered to the public at Saks Fifth Avenue in August 1968. It came about when magazine editor Carol Phillips had consulted with dermatologist Dr Norman Orentreich for an article called “Can Great Skin Be Created?” The article caught the attention of Estee Lauder and Dr Orentreich was enlisted by the company to help create the first Dermatologist skincare range.
Clinique is slightly different from most cosmetic companies in that its aim is to meet individual skincare needs. Clinique does not offer a universal solution regardless of skin type, rather, with its unique line of products, it seeks to customise an approach to skin care based on the specific individual.
Formulated by chemists and dermatologists, Clinique’s skin care system is based on a 3 Step System of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising. All products are allergy tested and most are 100% fragrance free.
After the classic 3-steps are established, new products are introduced to address further concerns and/or needs of the skin.
Since the 1970’s Clinique have also been selling a line of fragrance free hair care products. Although mostly known as a skincare line, 50% of revenues are derived from make-up products, popular for being more sheer and subtle than most traditional cosmetics.
The first Clinique fragrance, Aromatics Elixir, was launched in 1971, targeting customers who wished to wear perfume but were allergic. Estee lauder was guided the development of the fragrance, using fragrant oils that she knew were well tolerated, testing it extensively and finally creating the world’s first hypo-allergenic fragrance.
Clinique's most famous fragrance, called Happy, is advertised as being "a hint of citrus, a wealth of flowers, a mix of emotions and a chic, modern, multi-layered sparkling floral." Happy is also available in other products. With the success of Happy, Clinique then went on to develop Happy into other sister fragrances, such as Happy To Be and Happy Heart. Clinique also introduced two Limited Edition Happy fragrances Happy Holiday and Happy In Bloom, the latter of which is currently available in shops.
There are currently two Clinique men's fragrances available: Chemistry Skin Cologne for Men is designed to wear daily, which contains Jamaican ginger, citrus and amber; and Clinique Happy For Men.
