Dunhill Perfume
Alfred Dunhill Ltd is a British company specializing in luxury leather goods, writing implements, lighters, timepieces, fragrances and clothing. Coming from a line of drapers, Alfred Dunhill took over his family’s horse harness business in 1893, at the age of 21. During this era, horse transportation was starting to take a back seat as the invention of the motor car began to rise. This was Dunhill’s inspiration, and he began alter his family business from horse accessories to invent accessories for the car. It was from this that Dunhill Motorities was born, selling “everything for the motor car but the motor”. One of his most notable inventions was the “Bobby Finder Goggles”. Legend has it that in 1903, Dunhill was pulled over for speeding and came up with the idea for these goggles that would spot a policeman before they saw the motorist. Dunhill also dressed cars with dashboard clocks, trunks, and lamps. Another milestone in his inventive career was his development of the rear view mirror. Initially, these products remained exclusive to a prestigious ladies and gentlemen, but soon branched out.
In 1904 Alfred invented the “Windshield Pipe,” hoping to combat some of the difficulties a smoker would face while driving. It was this sort of innovation in response to the customer’s needs that would make Dunhill Pipes the leader in its field.
In 1906, the popular sophistication of pipe smoking prompted Dunhill to open his first tobacco shop in London. With the help of his renowned name, the pipe store located on London’s Duke Street gained popularity for its quality pipes, fine cigars and custom made tobacco concoctions. The shop soon came to be known for its customized blends. Each customer could come and create his own recipe, noted in a little book entitled “my mixture.” His tobacco products did not only gain recognition for the upscale common man, but with many dignified leaders such as Winston Churchill.
Dunhill opened a small factory of his own in 1910. He set down two principles that would guide the production of Dunhill Pipes. First, pipes would be made of only the finest quality briar, with exacting care by expert craftsmen. Secondly, the pipes would be priced accordingly; the customer would recognize the value of a superior product. This ran counter to the current trend of inexpensive pipes of poor quality that one simply discarded after a short while.
With his name and stores being spread all around London, Dunhill soon made his way to the United States via New York City. The new office opened on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street in order to fulfil his American fan base. Soon after, the continental European store opened in Paris. During this time, began to expand his merchandise with table sets, Persian rugs, cutlery, onyx frames and exquisite clocks. Along with these products, Dunhill introduced the world with another milestone accessory dubbed as the “unique lighter”. The invention provided a more convenient, pocket-sized, one-handed method to ignite his fine tobacco products.
In the 1930’s Alfred Dunhill’s only daughter, Mary, pioneered a range of fragrances and cosmetics. In 1943 she launched Dunhill’s first fragrance, Escape, which was followed by the equally popular Dunhill for men.
In the mid-1900’s, Dunhill’s growth did not stop. He began to open more U.S. shops in Beverly Hills, Chicago and San Francisco. In the 1960’s, he ventured into the Far East and opened stores in Hong Kong and Tokyo. By the end of the 20th century, Dunhill’s product line had grown to almost 4,000 items and continues to grow. To this day, stylish inventor Alfred Dunhill, maintains a name of fine products that provide the utmost classicism for the contemporary man.
