Emanuel Ungaro Perfume

Emanuel Ungaro was born in 1933, in Aix-de-Provence, France to Italian parents. His father Cosimo Ungaro was a tailor who had fled Fascist Italy to start a new life in France. One of 6 children, Ungaro was interested in sewing from an early age, following in his father’s footsteps.

At the age of 22, instead of joining the family’s tailoring business, he moved to Paris, and worked for a small tailor’s. In 1958, he went to work for Cristobal Balenciaga, realising a long-held dream of being a courtier for “the Master”. This era instilled in him a sense of rigor, perfection, and the eternal search for an ideal.

In 1961 Ungaro joined Courreges, designing many of the 60's metal outfits of that house. Courreges was a leading couturier of this decade, and Ungaro's designs were very popular.

Ungaro opened his own fashion house in Paris in 1965. With 40 square meters and four seamstresses, Ungaro quickly imposed his sense of colour, structure, and fashion on the international fashion scene.

In 1968, he created his first prêt-a-porter collection, Parallèle and opened a boutique at 2, avenue Montaigne in Paris. During the next 30 years, the Emanuel Ungaro House expanded to include boutiques and licensing agreements worldwide. His debut was excellently received, with supermodels Twiggy and Penelope Tree being photographed by Avedon wearing Ungaro masks. He attained the Neiman Marcus Award in 1969.

Ungaro loved to work with metal, even dressing his models in metal bras, and soon he was a leading metal merchant, with body sculptures and body jewellery. From the 1970 onwards, Ungaro's work became softer and less rigid. Clothes were made in boldly printed fabrics which have now become his trade-mark. He pays great attention to detail in order to enhance colours, patterns and textures of clothes. Ungaro launched his first menswear collection, Ungaro Uomo, in 1973. His first fragrance, Diva, was launched in 1970, the design of the bottle having been inspired by one of his draped garments.

In 1980 and 1981, Ungaro received the Golden Thimble Award for his contributions to fashion. At the age of 55, he married Florentine-born, Laura Bernabei, in 1988.

In 1996, he formed a partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo, and in 1997, along with Bulgari created a new company: Emanuel Ungaro Parfums. The first new fragrance "Fleur de Diva", launched in 1997 joined "Senso," "Diva," and "Emanuel Ungaro For Men." In 2001 “Desnuda followed, and in 2004 “Apparition”. The year 1998 saw the launch of a collection of Emanuel Ungaro footwear and handbags produced by Salvatore Ferragamo.

In 2001, Ungaro decided to hand over the design reins to Giambattista Valli, though he still gave creative input. His last ready-to wear collection was showcased in Spring 2002.

In 2005 the brand Emanuel Ungaro announced that it was to be sold to Pakistan-born internet tycoon, Asim Abdullah, head of Global Asset Capital Investment Bank. At the time, the total wholesale revenue of products sold under the Ungaro label was approximately € 70 million. After the announcement, Emanuel Ungaro publicized his retirement from designing.
