Estee Lauder Perfume

Estee Lauder, together with her husband Joseph Lauder, was the founder of one of the most famous and pioneering cosmetics companies in the world. Little is known about Lauder’s early life, and many sources are contradictory. She was born Josephine Esther Mentzer, to Hungarian Jewish parents. Voting records show her birth date as July 1, 1908, yet her family claim she was born in 1906. Her family called her Esty, and she became Estee after a school official misspelled it as such. The family lived in a New York apartment over her father’s hardware shop. As a young girl, she helped her chemist uncle, Dr Schotz to sell creams he was making for New Way Laboratories.

In 1930, she married Joseph Lauter (later to become Lauder), and the couple divorced in 1939, only to remarry in 1942. The couple then remained together until Joseph’s death in 1982. They had 2 sons, the older Leonard was chief executive of Estée Lauder and is now chairman of the board.

Together, the couple began producing creams in a converted restaurant and Estee Lauder Inc. was established in 1947. To begin with, the company had only four products: super rich all purpose cream, creme pack, cleansing oil and skin lotion. In 1948, after winning a concession in Saks Fifth Avenue, the Lauder business took off. Lauder traveled the States meeting with mangers of top department stores, trying to get her products on sale in their stores. Her persistence paid off and by the 1950’s Estee Lauder products were available in all the major department stores.

The introduction of Youth Dew in 1953 put Estee Lauder firmly on the map The perfume and bath oil sold over 50,000 units in the first year. The company continued to expand their range and in 1960 went international, with its first overseas account being in Harrods in London. The following year they opened an office in Hong Kong. In 1964, the Lauders started Aramis Inc., producing fragrances and grooming products for men. Later that year the company expanded again opening Clinique Laboratories Inc, the first dermatologist guided, allergy tested fragrance free cosmetic brand Lauder had created. In 1967, Estée Lauder was rewarded for her efforts by being named one of ten Outstanding Women in Business in the United States by business and financial editors. This was followed by a Spirit of Achievement Award from Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in 1968.

By the mid-1970s, the company had grown so large and so popular that its products could be bought in over 70 countries and had become responsible for 50 percent of all retail beauty products sold in the U.S. by the end of the millennium.

The Estée Lauder Companies’ annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign involves all of the 18 brands that make up The Estée Lauder Companies. These include but are not limited to: Estée Lauder, Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives, Origins, M·A·C, Bobbi Brown essentials, Tommy Hilfiger, jane, Donna Karan, Aveda, La Mer, Stila, and Jo Malone. They collectively represent The Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s first and largest corporate supporter. Over $10 million has been raised for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation since 1993. Another $1 million was raised from their retail partners since July 2002. .
