Issey Miyake Perfume

Issey Miyake Issey Miyake is considered to be the first Asian fashion designer to receive worldwide renown. Born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938, he was just seven years old when the atomic bomb hit the city during the Second World War. His mother, who was badly burned, died four years later after suffering complications.

Even as a child, Miyake was interested in fashion, and pored over his sister’s fashion magazines. He dreamed of being a dancer or an artist, and admired the way certain clothes draped over the body making a bold statement and was inspired by the photographs of Andy Warhol.

In 1959 Miyake studied graphic arts at Tamar Art University in Tokyo, where he showed his designs in a theatrical event he named “A Poem In Cloth and Stone”. After graduating in 1964he moved to Paris to learn haute couture, first at the Syndicat de la Couture, and then as an apprentice of Guy Laroche. In 1968 Hubert de Givenchy offered Miyake a place in his design house. Here, Miyake learnt the trade and sketched designs that were sent to notable women such as Audrey Hepburn and the Duchess of Windsor.

In 1969 Issey Miyake left for New York where he worked as a designer for Geoffrey Beene, who became his mentor.

In 1970, Miyake returned to Tokyo, ready to branch out alone and founded the Miyake Design Studio. His designs attempted to take garments back to the basic shapes dictated by the quality of the fabric, and caused a sensation on the catwalks. In 1971 he founded the Issey Miyake design Studio in Tokyo and opened a boutique at Bloomingdales in New York.

In 1973, he presented his designs in a show in Paris, and was an instant success, listed by French papers as one of the top ten fashion designers. In 1979 he opened a design company in France, followed by one in the United States in 1982.

During the 1980’s, at his Tokyo design studio, he continued to experiment with fabrics, creating affordable clothes that were practical as well as fashionable. He delved into other areas of art, including his “Bodyworks” exhibit at museums in Tokyo, San Francisco and London.

Miyake launched his first fragrance, L’eau d’Issey, in 1992, which received praise from critics for its fresh minimal scent. The bottle’s design was based on the Eiffel Tower, with its conical shape and steel tip. A range of body care products, lotions and creams was also released. The scent was followed by L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme (for men) in 1994.

In the early 1990’s Miyake took a break to backpack through Greece.

In 1993, Miyake launched his flagship design concept: pleats. His permanently pleated clothes were designed to be functional, universal for the modern buyer, and accessible to a wide market. The pleats were made using Miyake's innovative fabric technology.

In 2000, after 30 years at the forefront of design, Issey Miyake announced that he would be handing over the reins of ready-to-wear to his right-hand man Naoki Takizawa (born 1960) who has been with him since 1989. This decision allowed Miyake to focus on the A-POC range pushing the concept that real clothes can be made from a single piece of cloth. His A-POC shop opened in Spring 2000 in London.

A new Miyake men's fragrance, L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme Intense, will be introduced worldwide in September 2007. Issey Miyake fragrances are produced under a long-term agreement by the Beauté Prestige International division of Shiseido, who also produces fragrances for Jean-Paul Gaultier.
