Joop Perfume
Designer Wolfgang Joop was born in Potsdam, Germany in 1944. His ancestral home was close to grounds of the Sanssouici Palace and its opulence and splendour would fuel his inspiration in his later career.Joop Studied advertising psychology, drawing and sculpture at the University of Braunschweig. He was later invited to become an honorary professor of life drawing and design at Berlin’s University of Art. Joop was a journalist before he began his fashion career, when he and his former wife Karin, entered a fashion competition and won all 3 first prizes. At this time, he was a freelance designer for fashion houses in Italy, France and Germany.
The first collection to carry his name was presented in 1979. His name, Joop, is actually a Dutch first name, and instead of adding his own first name, he chose an exclamation mark, to signify innovation and creative energy.
The JOOP! Label followed in 1981, the ready-to-wear collection and JOOP! Jeans in 1987, and the fur collection in 1990. His first fragrance was launched in 1987. Over the following years the product line was consistently enlarged and the JOOP! brand expanded with eyewear, shoes, accessories, leatherwear, body-and knitwear, both for men and women. The JOOP! fashion world was finally rounded off with the introduction of the licenses for hosiery, kids, time, socks and jewellery.
In 1998, Joop sold 95% of his stake in the JOOP! GmbH to Wunsche AG, then sold the remaining 5% in July 2001. This ended his involvement with JOOP! and enable him to redirect his energy to other creative projects including writing and illustration and the launch of his new label 'Wunderkind.' This was presented during the Fall/Winter season, in Berlin 2004, and debuted in New York during the Spring 2005 season.
Today, all partners collaborate closely with the designer Wolfgang Joop in order to ensure the consistent look and high quality for which JOOP! products are known. Both the JOOP! design studio and the management are located in Hamburg, Germany.
Wolfgang Joop is not only a designer but also an illustrator. His drawings and drafts have been featured in numerous exhibitions and are part of several museums' permanent collections. Joop himself collects contemporary art and sculptures. Frequently he is called upon to create not only the hemlines but also the headlines. He writes editorial stories for news magazines like Der Spiegel, Stern and Zuricher Weltwoche.
Joop is personally involved in two charitable organizations: Dunkeiziffer e.V., which helps sexually abused children and Hamburg Leuchtfeuer, a charity to support HIV sufferers.
