LOLITA LEMPICKA Perfume
Usually fashion houses are called after their founder, Lolita Lempicka is different.
In 1983, Josiane Pividal and her husband Joseph, an interior designer created their label as a tri
bute to Nabokov’s famous novel, Lolita, and to the painter Tamara de Lempicka.
Josiane was born in 1954 in Bordeaux and was taught to sew by her mother, a trouser maker working from home. By the 1970’s Josiane was redesigning second hand clothes, showing a flair for making them look new and original. The couple opened their first boutique in 1984, in the Marais district of Paris, and became an instant success- the couple decided it would be simpler to change their names to Lolita and Joseph-Marie Lempicka.
The company swiftly expanded into the international market, and in 1987 signed Kashiyama to direct their Japanese boutiques. In the same year they launched Lolita Bis, a junior line which they dedicated to their daughter, Elisa.v
Lempicka wished to make her designs accessible to all ages and budgets and a more basic line followed in 1995, Lolita Design Studio (L.S.D). Lempicka sees her customers as ranging from schoolgirls to grandmothers and her look is very French. Her “naughty but nice” inspiration is not just reflected in her clothing designs but also in her perfume.
In 1998, Lolita Lempicka the fragrance was launched. This contradictory liquorice scent was created by the scientist Tom McGee, and won Best Fragrance, awarded jointly by the Fragrance Foundation and the American FIFI. Even the packaging won an award- DCI’s Package of the Year for 1998. This award was attributed to the fact that women responded to the smell rather than attracting the opposite sex.
The naughty but nice element comes from the fact that in the U.S, liquorice is thought of as the classic cherry red-rope candy, yet in France, liquorice is synonymous with the aniseed flavoured liquor- hence the contradiction.
Described as the "fruit of our dreams," Lolita Lempicka comes in an apple-shaped bottle with the Lempicka name engraved on it, a portrayal of the fine details she puts into her clothing.
Whilst some of Lempicka’s lines achieved success, it was the Lempicka fragrance that established the house as a name to remember.
