Karl Lagerfeld Perfume

Karl Lagerfeld was born Karl Otto Lagerfeldt, in 1938 in Hamburg, Germany, the only child of a wealthy family. His Swedish father was a merchant banker who had made his fortune introducing powdered milk to Europe. His mother was a good many years younger than his father and her love of fashion and fragrances was to have a large influence over the young Karl. He was fascinated by the costumes in history books and began to design and sketch dresses, which he reports, was his favourite childhood pastime.

In 1952, along with his mother, he emigrated to Paris, where he studied informally with the ambition of becoming a fashion designer. In 1954 he won a prize for a wool coat from the wool Secretariat, the same contest in which Yves Saint Laurent won an award for a dress. From 1954-57, he worked for Pierre Balmain, then moved to the house of Patou in 1958. Here he designed 2 Haute Couture collections a year for 5 years, showing his first collection under the name Roland Karl.

For some time he freelanced at Krizia and Valentino, but became disillusioned and left Paris for Italy to study art. In 1965, he returned to fashion and designed furs for Fendi. During the 70’s he designed at Chloe, having carte blanche to produce feminine ready-to-wear creations, bringing him international acclaim. In 1983, he designed his last collection for Chloe and moved to the House of Chanel. At the same time he launched his own label, and his company Parfums Lagerfeld.

Although he continued to design for Chanel, Lagerfeld established his own design business in 1984 and resumed designing for Chloe in 1992. The engagement with Chloe ended in 1997, when design at Chloe was took over by ex-Beatle Paul's daugther Stella McCartney. Lagerfeld currently designs for three companies: his own label, Chanel, and furs for Fendi of Italy.

Recently, Lagerfeld collaborated with the international Swedish fashion brand H&M. On November 12, 2004, H&M offered a limited range of different Lagerfeld clothes in chosen outlets for both women and men. Only two days after having supplied its outlets, H&M announced that almost all the clothes were sold out. As an avid photographer, Lagerfeld often shoots his own press photos, and is sometimes called "Kaiser Karl" by the press. His personal trademarks include a fan, a long ponytail for his powdered-white hair, and sunglasses. He is a uniquely confident man and speaks German, French, English, and Italian.

His other hobbies include decorating and restoring old mansions. He is a bachelor and travelled Europe collecting antique furniture and acquiring paintings from the 18th century as well as many forms of modern art. For 12 years he worked on restoring an historic 18th-century French castle in Brittany, right down to the doorknobs. He owned an 18th-century townhouse in Paris, a 200-year-old workshop in Rome, and a summer villa in Monte Carlo that he redid in Louis XVI style. He is renowned for his vast library of fashion and costume history books as well as his love of the i-Pod.
