OSCAR DE LA RENTA Perfume
Oscar De la Renta was born Oscar Aristides Renta Fiallo, in the Dominican Republic in 1932. He studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, but quickly switched his attention to fashion. He began sketching for leading fashion houses which soon led to an apprenticeship with Spain’s most renowned couturier, Cristóbal Balenciaga. Later, De la Renta left Spain to join Antonio Castillo as a couture assistant at the house of Lanvin in Paris. In 1963, he arrived in New York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth Arden. De la Renta began his signature ready-to-wear label in 1965.
It was not until 2001 that De la Renta launched his accessory collection, which included shoes, bags and belts. His company now produce fragrances, eyewear, furs, jewellery, and scarves, cosmetic cases and sleepwear. His men’s range includes hosiery and suits. A furniture collection was debuted in 2002, which included a home fragrance collection.
De la Renta has received many awards in recognition of his talents. These include the CFDA Women’s Wear designer of the Year Award, the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and the American Fashion Critic’s Award, which he has won twice.
His fragrances have also been lauded - in 1991 he won the Fragrance Foundation Perennial Success Award for his first perfume, Oscar, a fragrance for women, launched in 1977. This is still a bestseller in over 70 countries. His men’s fragrance Pour Lui was launched in 1980 and was followed by Oscar for Men in 1999. His fragrance for women, Intrusion, was launched in 2002. So popular are these fragrances that De la Renta was the recipient of the Living Legend Award from the American Society of Perfumes.
De la Renta is a tireless patron of the arts. He serves as a board member of The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and Channel Thirteen/WNET. He is also on the boards of important cultural institutions such as New Yorkers for Children, the American Society, and the Spanish Institute.
He has also helped build a much needed school and day-care centre in the Dominican Republic for 1,200 children near his home in Punta Cana.
