Azzaro

Loris Azzaro was born in Tunisia in 1933 to Italian parents. The family moved to France where he studied Political Science in Toulouse, later travelling to Paris. Here he started his own label in 1962, making successful dresses from the outset. He became famous for designing glamorous and sexy gowns for the elite of French society, often featuring ornate beading on daring cuts. Over the course of his long design career, he dressed celebrities including Raquel Welch, Sophia Loren and Nicole Kidman.

Azzario’s collections were always named alphabetically by season, the first starting with A, and so on, though he often skipped letters such as Q,X or Z as it was difficult to find names for those letters. He was also well known for his men’s wear, accessories and especially his fragrances. His first, Couture, a women’s fragrance launched in 1975, became his signature scent.

Azzaro died in 2003 at the age of 70, in Paris, whilst still working on a collection. His daughter Beatrice took over management of the label. In 2004 French designer Vanessa Seward took over as head designer of the Azzaro label. They continue to release clothing but are now more well known for their fragrance line. Original Loris Azzaro vintage pieces are still very much in demand.
