Jean Paul Gaultier Perfume
Jean-Paul Gaultier was born on April 24th, 1952 in Val-de-Marne, France. He received no formal training in fashion design, yet sent sketches to famous couture stylists, and in 1970 caught the attention of Pierre Cardin, who hired him as an assistant. After 2 years, Gaultier spent a year designing for Jaques Esterel before joining the house of Patou in Paris.
In 1976, several of Gaultier’s sketches were published in the French fashion magazine Mode Internationale and favourably received by the fashion world. Later that year, he launched his own label for a company called Mayagor, whilst continuing to design free-lance.
He was signed by the well-funded Japanese clothing manufacturer Kashiyama, to design both men and women’s collections under his own name. His reputation grew, and he soon became renowned as the most avant-garde fashion designer of the time, nicknamed “The Prince of Perversity” and the “Enfant Terrible” of fashion.
He held many of his shows in an amphitheatre, originally a slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Paris, and tickets for these events were as coveted as his designs.
Gaultier used unique looking models of all shapes, sizes and ages. He told Interview Magazine, “I have never really cared about what fashion’s ideal was. There are different kinds of beauty and I always try to show that.”
In 1987, he won the French Designer of the Year Award. The following year he launched a lower priced sportswear line called Junior Gaultier, originally stocked exclusively in a small store in Paris, and later sporadically in U.S department stores. His other shop, on the Right Bank of Paris sold his men and women’s ready-to-wear collections, which carried much higher price tags.
One of Gaultier’s most devoted fans was Madonna, who on her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, wore only Gaultier designs, and made his lingerie over clothing trend an international phenomenon. He later designed her costumes for the 2006 Confessions tour, continuing their long-standing friendship. In 1997, Gaultier collaborated with French movie director Luc Besson to design costumes for the movie "The Fifth Element.”
Gaultier is also famous for co-hosting the irreverent T.V show Eurotrash, alongside fellow Frenchman Antoine De Caunes.
It was in 1993 that Gaultier launched his first fragrance, Classique, a women’s floral oriental scent, followed 2 years later by the men’s fragrance, Le Male. His third fragrance, Fragile (for women) was launched in 2000, and a unisex fragrance followed in 2005. Jean-Paul Gaultier's latest men's fragrance, Fleur du Male, was launched in April 2007.
All Jean-Paul Gaultier perfumes are produced under a long-term license by Paris-based Beaute Prestige International, a division of the Japanese company Shiseido that also produces fragrances for Issey Miyake.
