LANCOME Perfume
Lancome began in 1935, when Armand Petitjean, a student of Francois Coty, was exploring the ruins of a castle, Le Chateau de Lancosme, whilst on holiday in the French countryside. Petitjean had a passion for roses, growing them in his own rose garden in the Ville d’Avray, just outside Paris. He was inspired by the roses growing wild around the grounds of the castle and set about creating fragrances with the rose as his symbol.
In 1935 Lancome launched its first 5 fragrances at the World’s Fair in Brussels: Tendre Nuit, Bocages, Conquete, Kypre and Tropiques.
Nearly all the bottles were created by the great artist Georges Delhomme and are today collector’s items. Lancôme was introduced in the United States in the 1950s. From 1982-1996, Isabella Rossellini was the spokesmodel for Lancome, stars since have included Drew Barrymore and Uma Thurman. In 2006 Lancome unveiled Raica Oliveira as one of their spokesmodels.
The company's dermatologist is Tina Alster, founder of the Washington Institute of Laser Cosmetic Therapy.
Over the years the rose appearing on Lancome packaging has varied. In 1964 a stylised long-stem rose was the symbol of the brand; in 1974 the rose lost its leaves and became more refined. By 1996, the rose had come to life in adverts, as it straightened up and blossomed into different colours depending on the type of product; white for skincare, red for make-up and yellow for sun care. In 2000 the rose became an integral part of Lancome.
A real Lancome rose actually exists. Created by Delbard in 1973, it is a pale fuchsia rose with a long cylinder shape bud with thick shiny petals. It is a breed of 2 types of rose: it’s father, “the Oak Tree” rose bush, an extremely sturdy plant producing magenta red flowers, and its mother with flowers almost mauve in colour.
